Health Insurance, Capitol Hill & Blogs, Pt.13 – Learn from those who have succeeded.

Previous…

Mr. Sarpolis’ solution is to create a health insurance/care system where everyone contributes something. He notes that: “We tilt too far in this country toward the idea of personal responsibility.” Of course he concedes that a few people bring illness on themselves, but asserts that this is not usually the case. People ‘just get sick’. A good and healthy way to attack the problem is to involve even the ‘lower income side’. He implies the foolishness of assuming that merely ‘underwriting’ people, as private health insurance does now will solve the problem. What do we do about the plight of those people with ‘pre-existing conditions’? Some of them are strapped into deplorable jobs with no hope of ever bettering their lives because they know that if they find a better job, they will become ‘denied outcasts’ by the current health insurance industry. A great many of our fellow ‘countrymen’ (and women) have already met this fate and are now destitute.

Mr. Sarpolis’ overriding statement is the foundation of truth and not just ‘someone’s’ rhetorical opinion’ on a successful health insurance/care system. He purports: “There has got to be a better way, and all the other western countries of the world prove this to us with much less costly systems that take care of their citizens and demonstrate better health by all measures than the US.” He suggests the fallacy of believing that the free market will work supremely in controlling costs and quality in a viable health insurance/care system. Where is their any evidence? If it held validity, then when we suffer a catastrophe and find ourselves requiring extensive care, all we need to do is bargain our way out of the incredible charges that will arrive in the mail a few weeks later. The person who figures that one out could easily become the richest person in the world.
