Next we here from professor, Dr. Oliver Fein, of clinical
medicine and public health at Weill Cornell Medical College of
Cornell University in New York City. He is also the
president-elect of Physicians for a National Health Program and
a noted expert in his field. Dr. Fein states that the
combination of having a chronic illness and not having health
insurance “can be a potentially lethal combination.” He
explains, "These people are going to end up with complications
of their illnesses prematurely. They will be disabled early.
They will probably die younger.” This is not just a major
problem…it is a health disaster. Over time, treatment will be
very costly, both financially and to health. Many of these
cases of no health insurance will begin through the ER but
escalate to hospital admission. These are cases like “diabetes
out of control and congestive heart failure because of
hypertension," Dr. Fein adds. These could have been treated
much more effectively and less costly at clinics at earlier
stages, had these people had health insurance.
One of our most renowned persons in the research field of
health insurance/care is Karen Davis. Karen is the president of
the New York-based Commonwealth Fund. This group specializes in
and has performed very comprehensive research on the effects of
either having inadequate health insurance or not having of
health insurance at all and the consequences that result. She
informs us that “People with high blood pressure are at risk
for catastrophic medical events like a stroke if they are not
getting the drugs they need or having a doctor monitor their
disease,
