Cambridge Study: Millions of ‘Uninsurable’, Pt.8 -- Plight
of the ‘underinsured’.

This very ‘savings by prevention’ issue was the first key
focus in the creation of Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts health
insurance/care model. Mitt was able to bring about a phenomenal
indirect result by promoting the proactive approach. He noted
the tremendously high costs of ‘ER Abuse’, which he labeled
‘free-riding’. He projected substantial savings by causing
everyone to have health insurance by whatever means. That
eradicated the ‘free-riding’ quickly and the savings were
substantial. But, in addition Mitt also attacked the problem of
people foregoing preventive care for lack of health insurance.
Once that was in place, another substantial savings was
appreciated. (For more on the striking success with this
effort, please refer to the article series entitled: “Mass.
Health, A Creator Explains”.)
Consumers for Health Care Choices is a nonprofit advocacy
health-care consumer group. The group’s founder and director is
Greg Scandlen. He has been involved with these issues for years
now and has closely followed the ‘Cambridge study’. Assessing
it all, he states that “having [health] insurance is not likely
to prove to be a panacea for these folks." Greg goes on to
explain "People with chronic conditions who [have health
insurance, but, still] are not doing so well, either. We do not
do a very good job of delivering chronic care in this country
for anyone."
It’s a proven statement that those with chronic illness and without coverage are up against the ‘health
insurance/care wall’ But it is also noteworthy of another
segment…that is the group with inadequate health insurance.
Some times because of caps and other limits.
