Cambridge Study: Millions of ‘Uninsurable’, Pt.9 -- Substitutes may prove fatal.

Previous…

More and more, the scaled-back health insurance policies that only cover catastrophes are being touted as the only affordable solution for the low-income segment. The ‘Cambridge’ study has found ahat those with high deductibles health insurance are also experiencing major problems. A large segment of our country just does not have a spare $5,000 kicking around and, as a result of a high health insurance deductable, also forego both preventive and necessary medications and medical procedures.

The Commonwealth Fund has conducted a very comprehensive study showing that 25 million Americans with ‘inadequate health insurance fall into this segment. Commonwealth Fund CEO and co-author of their study summarizes that many of these people are worse off than the people who have no health insurance at all. (For details on the study and ‘underinsured’ segment, please refer to the article series entitled “Hidden Dangers of Inadequate Health Insurance”.

It was noted earlier that many of these hard-pressed families without health insurance often resort the ‘free-ride’ tactics by frequenting the ER for non-emergency purposes. It’s also stated by some politicians claim that ‘no one is without health care ‘cause they can always go to the ER’. Referring back to the backfire of relying strictly on the ER and it’s needless negative financial effects, We still refer to Mitt Romney’s valuable advice in the article series entitled “Mass. Health, A Creator Explains”.

In summary, these studies describe harsh consequences for neglecting easily treatable diseases in so many people. The study’s authors contend, “For some of the 11.4 million uninsured Americans with serious chronic conditions [having no health insurance], access to care seems to be unobtainable; many may face early disability and death as a result.”
