McCain vs Obama: Common Ground, Pt.3 – Mr. McCain’s
tactic; Lose employer-based health insurance.
Previous…
So referring to the outlined numbers above, let’s define
some detail:
1) Move everyone over to a new health insurance
bargain basement consumer-driven market of private health
insurance. Mr. McCain’s proposed implementation for this goal
is actually in two parts: Axeing the old ‘employer-based health
insurance system, shuffling everyone over to private health
insurance.
The first step breaking away from
our nation’s ‘traditional’ model of relying on employer-based
health insurance. (At present, about 60% of our nation’s
insured are relying on the stability of employ-based health
insurance.) This would be done by taking away the current tax
breaks that partly sustain the popularity of the employer-based
coverage. In place of this long-held incentive, Mr. McCain
would offer tax credits up to $2,500 per individual tax return,
or $5,000 per joint tax return. This measure weighs well toward
the micro-objective of moving every over to private insurance.
As far as its effectiveness toward the ‘vision’ that carries
the greater weight, it may not stack up. Remember, that vision
is to “avail effective health insurance to all Americans.”
For greater introspect on the
greater effect, please refer to “Defining
the Health Insurance/Care Chasm, Pt.3”,

Buster 101, Pt.4 – (2) Will tax credit get it?”
and “Myth
Buster 101, Pt.5 – (3) Will Consumer-driven get it?”.
2) Implementing the Cut the benefits to
bare bones so that medical treatment above the minimum is too
expensive for most Americans is achieved by changing the law to
allow selling health insurance across state lines. This would,
effectively, circumvent the long-standing state-level consumer
protective mandates.
