Obama VS McCain Health Care: Contrasts, Pt.1 – How big is
the problem?
Health insurance/care is finally reaching top priority as a
most important domestic issue for the nominees. While our
nation’s health insurance/care system still flounders,
proposals are continuing to be refined and those concerned are
paying closer attention. Co-director of the Center for
Economic and Policy Research, Dean Baker has done a little
research himself and has posted a good article for Truth.org
on the www.alternet.org web site. He points out that we live
in the only wealthy country that doesn’t provide health
insurance/care for all it’s peoples. The kicker of it all is
that, even though we have one of the worst systems going, we
still pay “more than twice as much for it than those other
countries.” Could it get any worse? It could and is.
Having a mind-boggling 47 million of our citizens without
health insurance/care is incomprehensible to the peoples of
those other countries. Both the numbers keep rising and the
costs keep rising. With these rising costs, employers continue
to either pass on the added expense to their employees which
they can already ill-afford or else, to drop health insurance
benefits all together. Out of control medical cost increases
are stressing our age-old system to the breaking point. $14
million health industry executive salaries don’t help the
problem, either. With such a large percentage of these colossal
expenses being picked up by the government, it’s no wonder
there’s not enough to go around. So, if we must turn to our
leaders for a fix, we will do well to know what they’re
proposing.
