More Details & Their Implications, Pt.1 –Flurry of new
stuff.
With the worsening crises that is our nation’s health
insurance/care system, researchers have been very busy. Every
day these people piece together a little more of the puzzle.
Wendy Diller of Business Week has posted a very informative
article on www.msnbc.msn.com, illuminating some of the latest
findings. We already know about the 47 million Americans
without health insurance as of 2006. But did we know about the
steep line of increase that was taking place. Did we know that
this figure is up from 38.4 million back in 2000? This figure
from the Commonwealth Fund represents an increase of 18% over
6 years. This could be a uniform straight line, projecting the
total number today of being 48.4 million. But if the rate were
increasing, that figure could be even higher. It’s only common
sense that when unemployment soars, losing health insurance,
is soon to follow in many cases.
A new and growing concern of study is now the ‘under
insured’. This is an important segment to study because many
of these people are in worse shape than their ‘uninsured’
counterparts. It has been found by millions that having
inadequate health insurance disqualifies them from the breaks
of the uninsured and that the little amount paid by their
health insurance still leaves them financially ruined.
The adult portion of this segment has made a giant leap,
from only 16 million in 2003, up to 25 million as of last
year. This is a colossal 60% increase. The health insurance
isn’t the only part of the equation, though. Escalating
Medical costs may be the greater cause of the problem.
