Mini-Biz Health-Care Wishes and Woes, Pt.1 – Another
important piece of the puzzle.
Los Angeles-based writer, Karen Klein of Business Week has
posted a very well-written article on businessweek.com to
educate us on the health insurance aspect of the
less-published, but still significant subset of small
businesses we call micro-business. Karen is well-versed in in
the field of small businesses and writes well-versed articles
covering topics to inform and assist small businesses and
entrepreneurs in today’s business arena. In this article,
Karen has done a study of the unique challenges faced by this
unique sector of American business. The article concerns the
desire of those enterprises constituting 10 or less workers,
to offer employee health insurance, but that are being
squeezed out due to the ever-increasing costs. Karen presents
the results and findings of a recent employer-based health
insurance survey and provides analysis.
In a nutshell, it was found that most of these companies
agree with the need to provide employer-based health insurance,
but the rising costs have placed it out of their reach. This
was the conclusion of the findings from a recent survey,
performed by NASE. NASE is an association called National
Association for the Self Employed and concerns itself with the
unique world of these ‘micro-businesses’. This survey is called
NASE’s ‘2008 Health Care Survey’ and included almost 4,000
responding micro-business owners and self-employed individuals.
Most of these entrepreneurs possessed a strong belief that our
country needs to provide the availability of quality health
insurance for all of it’s citizens that is within their means.
They do, however, have very differing views about what can be
done and how it should be done and are, also, concerned about
the impact that health insurance reform will have on their
business.
