The Real Health Care Contenders, Pt.1 – The big
heavyweight slugout.
Interestingly, a new take is evolving that may prove to be
the prevailing bout to decide the outcome of our critical
quest for true health insurance/care reform. Tim Noah has
posted on the www.slate.com website, a behind-the-scenes look
at a new battle line that has formed among the heavyweights.
He points out the limitations of only relying in the political
ring by illuminating the ‘slugfest’ that is erupting between
two opposing new and powerful lobby campaigns. As it sizes up,
in the one corner is ‘The health insurance industry’. The
challenger in the other corner is ‘The loose confederation of
labor unions and various liberal nonprofits’. ‘The health
insurance industry’ starts with a combination called "The
Campaign for an American Solution”, followed quickly by a
flurry of blows called a ‘listening tour’. The first location
of the tour is Columbus, OH, being held today (Tuesday).
Publicity will abound, as Chris Frates of Politico explains
that print ads will begin next week, featured newspapers all
over the place.
From the opposite corner is the threat of extending Medicare
coverage to everybody or “to regulate health insurers so
closely that health insurance would become a government program
in everything but name,” as prosed by Mr. Noah. The fear is
that, if a Medicare grew to be too large, it would threaten the
survival of our current style of health insurance and that
portion of the industry that has been so profitable. The scary
thing is that almost all of the other advanced industrial
nations having democracy have already successfully achieved
this.
