Nominees’ Update on Health Insurance, Pt.2 – Mr. McCain’s
latest stance.
Previous…
Mr. McCain is proposing a moderate health insurance
“refundable tax credit” to each working individual that awards
refunds for, as much as, $2,500 to $5,000 (individual or
family) from income tax. Estimates indicate that this would,
nominally, cover about half of the typical health insurance
annual premiums today. If I understand this correctly, the
full-amount rebate would only apply to those who are already
paying, at least, that much in taxes. So does this mean that
all individuals earning less that $25,000 and families earning
less than $50,000 per year will receive a reduced rebate for
health insurance? With our shattered economy, what with the
millions of unemployed (who far outnumber the few lucky ones
still receiving ‘unemployment benefits’, but don’t exist in the
government percentages called ‘unemployed’)?
Not to fear, we are promised a nation where ‘affordable’
health insurance will be available to all. Thru some ‘fuzzy
logic’, still to be refined (thus far, we’ve only been given
“these are extremely preliminary estimates”). We are told this
will be a reality, should Mr. McCain prevail. This would
certainly allay some of the fears to a large percentage of the
45 million who have no health insurance at all today.
Mr. McCain, at least, has finally acknowledged that some
help from government subsidized health insurance will be
necessary to achieve this. Centrist as this may sound, at least
this aligns better with reality. In order to effectively
address the worst of the crises, we must give serious
consideration to the incredibly numbers represented by the
‘uninsured’ segment of our population.
