Those Worst Off, Pt.12 – Here’s a fresh outlook.
Previous…
All this being said, high-risk pools are not the only game
in town. The health insurance/care plan proposed by Mr. Obama
takes a very different tack. It does not place total reliance
on high risk pools, which are obviously laden with inherent
problems. Instead, Mr. Obama wants to bolster risk-sharing
plans, instead of high-risk plans. This is probably the
greatest value of the employer-based health insurance. 60% of
our nation knows and uses it now and have relied on its
stability until recent. The recent problem is the trend of
employers starting to drop it. Mr. Obama intends to build in
devices to bolster the risk-sharing employer-based health
insurance.
Certainly, one of the main problems causing our nation’s
current health insurance/care crises is the out-of-control
medical cost condition, where our citizens are being charged
many times the amount of medical costs than any other
industrialized country in the world. Ignoring that fact is
guaranteed failure. Mr. Obama has a feature to recon with that
also. It’s called a ‘connector’, similar to that of the
Massachusetts health insurance/care model in some ways. It is
expected to become so large as to control enough of the
open-market to keep extreme and excessive expenditures in
check.
Mr. Obama is also attending to these ‘worst off’ victims
with allowing “up to $65 billion a year into subsidies” (taken
from Mr. Sack’s article again). Although 55% of our nation is
willing to pay higher taxes for a working health insurance
system "administered by the government” (according to a recent
CNN News poll), the beauty of Mr. Obama’s plan is that the
taxes of 9 out of 10 Americans won’t even be affected. One last
element of Mr. Obama’s plan is that there would be mandates
compelling Health insurance companies to cover these ‘worst
off’ that are now being denied for ‘pre-existing condition’
reasons.
