Health Care – Anybody Care?, Pt.1 -- Someone else's
problem.
Michael L. Millenson of the Washington Post has posted an
article articulating the plight of the victims and, should-be
subjects. That is, those almost-50 million Americans who don’t
have health insurance. He speaks of our society’s undercurrent
message in the music of rapper MIKE-E. Some of his lyrics are
“You are among the masses/One of 47 million people without
health care access . . . Focus on the laws that must be
enacted/Because we know there are flaws in our health care
practices.” The American Cancer Society has even sponsored a
video. The video brings out the despair, frustration and
feelings of those without health insurance and those effected.
It is such a shame that our country with such pride of “Having
it all together before the world” is in the dismal position of
being the only developed country that can’t find a way to
provide health insurance/care for all its citizens.
The underlying message that Mr. Millenson is trying to bring
out is that, even with all the fine articles posted and all the
other media coverage describing the plight of millions without
health insurance, so very few of our huge population still
under the seriousness. It’s like “Well, we have health
insurance. They don’t have health insurance. It’s their
problem, not ours”. This is the major obstacle to the fix.
Those that have really don’t care very much about the hurting.
It’s only every now and then, when medical costs spike, those
with health insurance get scared when they notice the alarming
rate of employers dropping health insurance or an economy doom
with heavy unemployment surges gets close that they get
concerned for a few days.
