Finding Answers About the Uninsured, Pt.1 – What do we
know?
A very informative article has been posted on
eMaxHealth.com presenting the views of various experts to
explain the causes of our current crises and plight of the
nearly 50 million Americans who don’t have any health
insurance. They also debate what the best remedy should be. A
few weeks ago, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiated
and sponsored a campaign in behalf of the victims in that
segment. It was called “Cover the Uninsured Week” and was held
from April 27 through May 3. The purpose was to make the
public aware of this great problem and to get citizens
involved to do something about those without health insurance
in our country. Forums were held and seminars were offered all
around the nation. In addition to raising public awareness for
support, information was disseminated to assist victims in
securing subsidized (sometimes free) health insurance and to
educate small businesses to enable them to find avenues to
which they could afford to offer coverage to their employees.
With so much confusion and speculation about those without
health insurance, the many well-meaning and concerned groups
like the “Robert Wood” and the Commonwealth Fund still have a
daunting task ahead. Perhaps the best place to start would be
to scope the size of the problem. The latest large-scale study,
conducted by the US Census Bureau came up with a 47 million
figure of those without health insurance. Of course, these
figures go back to over a year ago and don’t account for the
time since then and the accelerating rate of worsening that
appears to be the trend. Most likely the number is much higher
today and still growing.
