Mass Success, Pt.1 -- Massachusetts Health insurance gets
good grades.
At last we have some meaningful results within the
plummeting tailspin of our health insurance world. Many fine
articles are emerging and heralding the news as this is
written, but the best I’ve found so far was reported by Kevin
Sack of the New York Times. Massachusetts seems to be leading
the way into the dense jungle of health insurance woes with
their very aggressive approach in implementing the most
radical health insurance reform to provide substantial
positive results. Borrowing ideas from the respectable
Commonwealth Fund, they are formulating a proof of concept
that has proven to be one of the most controversial since the
beginning of the presidential primaries.
This endeavor has many similarities to the proposed health
insurance propositions of the Democratic candidates.
Unfortunately the Democrats may never have the chance to
provide their own proof without the tangible confidence of a
nation that demands proof before they will believe. Some of the
greatest criticisms of the Massachusetts health insurance/care
initiative were that:
1) Not a high enough percentage of the problem sector
would be helped to any significance;
2) The private health insurance industry would be blown away as a result,
thereby collapsing the national
economy (funny no one has
noticed that our economy is already collapsing and this plan
isn’t even in
the national game);
3) The system will collapse under it’s own weight.
Since these were all legitimate concerns, it would be a good
idea to study the results of this smaller, but representive
model.
