The Young and Healthy, Pt.2 - They think it's too
expensive.
Previous…
You see, life is not ‘just a breeze’ for the responsible
young adults. In fact, this segment of people may have the
steepest climb of all. In these times it becomes very difficult
for this segment to even find a job at all. Few are in a strong
bargaining position to argue for health insurance benefits.
Even the lucky (or successful) few who do land a first job with
health insurance coverage, typically, must wait weeks, months
or even a full year to enroll. This can one of the most
vulnerable periods they will face. If they would only sit home
every night and knit by the TV they may be fine. Not a likely
scenario. Normally, these are the wildest times. Explore the
new freedoms. Who can blame them? Shall we brow-beat them with
lectures that one bad car wreck could easily wipe them out? Or,
how long a permanent disability lasts without quality health
care? I don’t believe they want to hear about it. So they wait
the time out for the health insurance to kick in.
Thus, considering that many of these young adults are not
just plain irresponsible, there are other reasons why they
remain without health insurance. A spokesman for a health
insurance company lobbying group called America's Health
Insurance Plansup by the name of Robert Zirkelbach explains
another important reason. He states "One of the reasons young
adults aren't covered is because they think it's too
expensive." Mr. Zirkelbach goes on to explains the error in
this thinking, saying . "Individual health care coverage is
more affordable and accessible than is widely known."
