Next President’s Health Insurance, Pt.2 –
Major contrasts, but no
immediate change expected.
Previous…
Even though drastic health insurance/care changes may not be
immediate, it’s worth noting the very different goals between
the two candidates. Mr. Obama’s forte is covering all those 46
million Americans who have no health insurance and the 25
million Americans with inadequate health insurance, many of
whom are worse off than those with no health insurance.
Mr. McCain’s forte seems to be, what he calls ‘leveling the
playing field’, by favoring individual-risk policies that favor
the profits for the health insurance industry and the open
market with cheaper, inadequate health insurance.
One other major contrast is that Mr. Obama seeks increased
government involvement in health insurance/care to reach a
better balance.
Mr. McCain seeks decreased government involvement in health
insurance/care. However, he has been less vocal about this
issue due to the problematic deregulation issues associated
with the lending market.
Perhaps the most important issue of all in contention is
that of shared-risk health insurance vs. individual-risk
coverage. Whereas Mr. Obama proposes to shore up and even build
on the shared-risk scheme, Mr. McCain is proposing changes that
most experts agree will be detrimental to the shared-risk
scheme in favor of the individual-risk style. McCain campaign
experts disagree with the non-partisan experts and downplay the
expected effect.
Again, the outlook right now is for not very much to happen
any time soon. The Democratic Congress are well-aware of the
risk and would be very hard-pressed to allow a change that
extreme in these fragile times of hardship and instability.
