Tide of Health Care, Pt.1 – Now what?
Better days are ahead for health insurance. The only
question is…how far ahead? We all know this crisis didn’t
happen overnight, but we wish it would go away over night. Now
that we have a clean slate, let’s assess what we do have. We
have a commitment of adequate and affordable health insurance
available to all Americans. We have a commitment to sweeping
health insurance reform. We have a President-Elect who will
not be inaugurated till January 20.
While Mr. O is already busy on all these health insurance
issues after winning office yesterday (maybe?), experts are
also sizing up the situation. They say that some health
insurance changes may be coming soon, but the big one’s are
down the road. The biggest road blocks at first are certainly
related to the economy and the melt-down. Not exactly a
cakewalk for a new incumbent.
One of the most respected expert organizations on health
insurance is the New York-based Commonwealth Fund. Their
president, Karen Davis offered some insight. She confesses not
to be on the inside track, but that she expects that, with the
troubled climate our country is in, Mr. O would probably work
in phases. These would progress over time.
Thomas Buckmueller, PhD and health economist with the
University of Michigan confers with this, suggesting that
reform will be slow. He is not extremely optimistic about there
being major reform but, as he says, “this seems to be the best
chance we have had in a long time." It is commonly expected
that Congress will also be heavily involved. As it stands, the
Congress has already been very active in creating their own
health insurance structure for about a year now to retrofit
into the plan of whoever would be elected next.
