Assessing Obama’s Divergence From McCain, Pt.6 – Extreme,
albeit mindful action.
Previous…
The stage is being set for a showdown. Without the Fannie &
Freddie debacle, Mr. Obama would have been staged for a very
fierce fight concerning health insurance regulation. But now
America: Republicans and Democrats alike, is finally waking up
(all it took was a firm slap in the face) to the not-so-hidden
dangers of allowing industries to do what ever they want to us.
There needs to be a bloodless revolution of values. Health
insurance and housing are cousins. We destroy ourselves if we
don’t defend them both. Lack of health insurance is killing
tens of thousands of us every year!
We can’t be so naive as to not expect a fight over health
insurance regulation, however. Industries will always hate
regulation and it’s true that too much regulation is bad. But,
certainly, to little regulation is just as bad, especially in
health insurance, where tens of thousands of lives are at
stake.
In this spirit, the remedy is for government and industry to
work together to find that healthy balance. Mr. Obama has his
work cut out, for sure. But if there should be a Democratic
Congress and a Democratic Executive, great change is possible.
Just like the extreme change we’ve seen with a Republican
Congress with a Republican Executive. Ordinarily this is not a
healthy condition, as we all know now from the Bush
administration. But when extreme measures of correction are in
order, extreme alliances seem to over-ride everyday
happenstance. The health insurance/care crisis is certainly
extreme and demands extreme, albeit mindful action.
