Assessing Obama’s Divergence From McCain, Pt.8 –
Universal health insurance may be required.
Previous…
Because the health insurance industry has to balance risk to
survive, providing health insurance to only high-risk clients
could cause them to ‘lose their shirts’. This is a legitimate
concern and will need to be resolved before the industry will
submit without a major fight. The health insurance industry is
a multi-trillion dollar industry and carries considerable
clout.
The health insurance industry does realize, however, that
our nation is in a worsening crisis and they are prepared to
make some concessions. They have stated that negotiations are
possible under the condition that all Americans be required to
secure health insurance. This has been an area that is a little
more aggressive than Mr. Obama has chosen to tackle. He doesn’t
see it as a bad idea, but believes it would divide his vote
heavily and doesn’t wish to ask his voters to leap that bridge
with him at this time.
Of course, Mr. Obama is well aware of this situation, too,
and is confident that further negations can reach a resolve
when the time comes. Also relevant here, is the initiative
already in development in Congress (of which there are a few).
Referred to, in its preliminary stage, as the Wyden Bill, but
formally called the Healthy Americans Act, this bi-partisan
initiative is designed to contain a basic health insurance/care
system structure in wait for the next President to work with.
Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon explains that the
plan is built around a mandate of quasi-universal health
insurance.
All working Americans will have health insurance premiums
automatically deducted from their federal taxes.

article series entitled: “Health
Insurance & Capitol Hill".
