Right to Adequate & Affordable, Pt.7 – Controlling
tricky medical costs.

Mr.
Reinhardt
is skeptical about any immediate savings on health insurance/care
from the technical innovations Mr. O is promoting. Oddly, this
is one of the few areas where Mr. O and Mr. Mc agree. It is
generally agreed that many treatments are duplicated between
different medical facilities for not having documentation that
is stored at some other facility. Instead of waiting a few
days to have documentation mailed to a doctor from the other
facility, they run new tests or snap new x-rays so they can
bill the health insurance. With instant access to
records which are stored elsewhere, doctors would have instant
access to remote medical records and not justify duplicate
treatments and procedures. This is a much more efficient
health insurance/care system. Critics are crying out that
it may take 10 years for all these savings to achieve
fruition. This may be the case (no one knows) but even if it
does, if maintained, this could be the beginning of what can be
a new way of life. Many people are so short sighted that they
can only understand instant gratification. But these are the
same people who also appreciate the long-term proactive
rewards.
Mr.
Reinhardt points out the crux of the health insurance/care
problem, without noting the unbridgeable gap. As he says,
medical care providers like to keep jacking their prices “as if
money grew on trees.” This is pure capitalism. He states that
Mr. Obama needs to put a lid on this. Most of our country is
bent on the benefits of capitalism. They’re not well educated
in economics and never reach the last chapter in the book that
explains that pure capitalism harbors the roots of it’s own
destruction. It would be political suicide for a presidential
candidate to point this out to the public. But Mr. O does have
a plan, which was attacked by Mr. McCain early on. By creating
a large public health insurance/care entity which would
compete with private industry, and controlling what they’ll pay
to medical providers, those providers will be forced to either
control their greed or give up the significant increase in
consumers that they would, otherwise have,
This will
also help the health insurance industry greatly because
they won’t be required to pay out for the out-of-control
medical charges.
