McCain vs. Destitute, Pt.4 – Who and why are so many
rejected?
Previous…
What was found was that people with pre-existing medical
conditions or considered seriously obese were flat-out denied
health insurance and deemed to be ‘un-insurable’. This is
exactly how unregulated capitalism works. Not complicated at
all. One detail should be pointed out, however. This narrow
‘online focus’ doesn’t mean that none of these’
internet-denied’ can never get health insurance anywhere. There
exist ‘high-risk pools’ where some of them can get health
insurance.
These are the same ‘high-risk pools’ that Mr. McCain is
eluding to in his health insurance proposal when he says “We’re
not going to leave anyone behind.” They’re now available in
about 30 states, but only seem to work for the ‘wealthy’ and
the ‘lucky’. The wealthy are able to pay the $10,000 a month
for health insurance premiums or get by with exclusions from
covering the pre-existing condition at issue, or the most
expensive treatments they require.
The ‘lucky’ here are the extremely small percentage of
applicants into these pools who are allowed in. These are
people who can’t afford the exorbitant health insurance
premiums and the very high deductibles attached. These people
are heavily subsidized by the state.
The study noted that women accounted for about two-thirds of
those rejected. The most common reason for denial was inclusion
of being pregnant or having undergone a prior c-section. This
was noted from a published ‘blacklist’ report issued by the
National Women’s Law Center. The significance here becomes
compromised, however, because two-thirds of the entire sample
(all 446,500 respondents) were also women.
