Medicare: The Next Golden Goose, Pt.5 – Show me the money!
Previous…
Mr. McCain s campaign said that, by eliminating fraud in the
two programs, the savings would offset the costs of his own
plan. Medicare and Medicaid, right now provide health
insurance/care for seniors, poor people and the disabled. Mr.
Obama seeks to expand these models to provide health insurance
to millions of Americans who, now, have none. We all know that
health insurance fraud is very bad. But we also know that
tapping into funds legally assigned for one purpose to be used
for another purpose can be even worse.
We should all know that tapping into Social Security funds
for other purposes has always been a prime target for the
Republican Party. It’s also the ‘Washington way’ to squander
miss-allocated funds on a bad bet and assume ‘forgiveness’
(like the initiative to privatize Social Security on Wall
Street and squander the existing account on other things). So
if Mr. McCain plans to stop all the health insurance fraud
first, then, afterward, glean the moneys saved for his own
health insurance plan that would be one thing. But, as a rule,
Republicans like to access the funds now and hope for the best.
Another hurdle is the Democratic congress. Should there be
any mistrust, they would likely shut Mr. McCain down. As a
result, he may use that refusal to blame congress when his
health insurance/care proposal fails.
Although, not a critical issue to his campaign, a workable
health insurance/care reform is critical to millions of
Americans. In order for Congress to approve, the funds could
only come from savings and the savings must be substantiated
first.
