Speaking Up On Obama’s Plan, Pt.4 – Critical congressional
support and time.
Previous…
The biggest question is, of course, will either candidate have
any luck budging a stubborn Congress on substantial changes in
our troubled health insurance/care system? Unfortunately for
Mr. McCain, he may be facing the ugly partisan block of a
strongly Democratic Congress. That may be one plus for Mr.
Obama. Another plus for Mr. Obama might be the fact that
Congress has already come a long way with their own idea of
health insurance/care reform. Strangely enough, it bears some
resemblance to Mr. Obama’s version. Called the “Healthy
Americans Act”, Oregon Senator Wyden is sponsoring this new
bi-partisan plan. It boasts a host of congressional heavies
like Ted Kennedy (called “the captain of the team”) who chairs
a key Senate Health Committee and was the one who called on the
Senate for health reform in the first place, ranking Republican
in the powerful Finance Committee, Chuck Grassley and 16 other
co-sponsors, 8 from each party. There goal was to have a basic
plan ready to go with a little refinement, depending who would
be next in the White House. For more on this heavily supported
effort in Congress, please refer to the series entitled: “Health
Insurance & Capitol Hill”.
Then there’s
always the possibility that health insurance may take a back
seat to the plethora of other issues troubling our nation.
It’s so easy to be a ‘nay-sayer’ and much easier to ‘burn a
barn’ than to build one. These people are quick to speak up in
attack, but are also the same people who whine the worst when
something adversely affects them. Inadequate health insurance
may land them behind the 8-ball but, alas, it may be too late
to fix.
