Hazy, Risky Health Plan, Pt.5 – Not a basic
right, health insurance must be born of pain.
Previous…
As previously mentioned, the effect of tax credits the will
be to encourage employers to drop benefits, causing workers to
shift from employer-based health insurance over to
individual-risk policies from private health insurance
providers. Mr. McCain justifies this approach by promoting the
benefits of portability. When someone changes jobs, they can
take their health insurance with them. Mr. Obama also offers
this feature as an option but does not force it on people.
McCain calls this “leveling the playing field” (for insurance
providers and their money, but not for employees and their
money).
By hurting the consumer financially, Mr. McCain claims his
rationale is for the consumers to be more accountable for their
own health (not because of greed). He does not belief that
health insurance/care should be a "basic right" for Americans.
He believes that each individual should be responsible for
themselves. The fact that he evades this major issue should be
very troubling to the general public. Owning up to this very
simple truth would make voting decisions concerning health
insurance much easier for everyone.
What are the ways in which Mr. McCain’s plan will cost
consumers more? A few examples are given here. First of all,
the current mainstay of our land relies on ‘shared risk.’. When
people are insured in groups, as with employer-based health
insurance, the premiums are lower because of the large numbers
of enrollees involved in a group. Plans are much more
economical because of lower overhead for the provider. Also, by
averaging the whole group, the provider is prohibited from
raising rates just because of the older and less healthy.
