Two Divergent Visions; Which is best?, Pt.2 – Diverging
philosophies collide.

Having been one of the top five issues for voters in all but
one of the last four presidential elections starting with the
Clinton ascendancy in 1992, health insurance/care has wavered
between the number 2 and number 4 spot from the get-go of our
latest primaries. The only reason health insurance/care keeps
slipping down now are the constant meltdowns occurring because
of the ‘W’ legacy that are finally crashing in on us. Polls by
the Pew Research Center for People and the continual press
releases affirm that health insurance/care issues will hold a
strong presence in the mind of voters, come November.
UNC at Chapel Hill expert and associate professor of social
medicine and health policy, Jonathan B. Oberlander, emphasizes
the sharp contrasts between the intentions of Barack and John.
Mr. Oberlander defines McCain’s stance as being another
"classic conservative philosophy”, still focusing on
market-driven solutions and strong individual freedoms for
citizens to do with their money as they please. The philosophy
dictates that competition is the best answer to high health
insurance/care costs and that individuals will act responsibly
without any external guidance. Health insurance/care are
personal issues and individuals are responsible for their own
fate.
Mr. Obama takes a very different track and believes that a
health insurance/care market “cannot work without government
regulation,” explained by Mr. Oberlander. As with every other
developed nation in the world, Obama believes "that substantial
federal oversight and investment are required.”
As such, Mr. O believes it is necessary for the government
to be heavily involved in order to make health insurance/care
of sufficient quality and so that all Americans can afford it.
